Hyderabad: Fluorescence has emerged as a powerful tool in modern chemical and biological research in view of its usefulness in a variety of applications, a top scientist said today. "Tools based on fluorescence spectroscopy have entered our life in some form. Gadgets used for routine diagnostic tests in clinics, pollution monitoring in big cities, and even sequencing of genomes are based on fluorescence," Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), said here.
He was speaking at a lecture organised on the occasion of National Science Day. "Fluorescence has emerged as a powerful tool in modern chemical and biological research due to a number of reasons," he said in the lecture on 'Fluorescence in chemistry and biology: An Evergreen'. There are very few areas in contemporary research in chemistry and biology where some form of fluorescence-based measurements are not used, Chattopadhyay added. Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence.
