Guntur GGH performs rare procedure successfully

VIJAYAWADA: Doctors of the gastroenterology wing at Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, performed a rare non-invasive endoscopic surgery to successfully remove a fluid cyst around the pancreas.

The cyst had formed due to inflammation of the pancreas and splenic artery pseudoaneurysm.

Gastroenterology head of department Dr. Kavitha and assistant professor Dr. Nagur Basha on Saturday said Saida Srinivasa Rao (35) from Annavaram in Krishna district had been suffering from severe stomach pain due to alcoholism. He came to GGH Guntur on May 17, where doctors conducted tests and found the fluid cyst around the pancreas. They then transferred the patient to the gastroenterology department.

Doctors Kavitha and Basha opted to treat the patient by endoscopy without going for surgery. A team of Guntur GGH successfully performed the rare operation on May 24. Doctors said the patient is currently stable and will be discharged in two to three days.

GGH superintendent Dr. Prabhavathi congratulated the doctors for performing the rare surgery, considered to be the first at a government hospital in the state.

Assistant professor Dr. Siva Ramakrishna, post-graduate doctor Anil Kumar and doctors Neeraja, Polaiah and Vishnu Mahesh were part of the team that undertook the surgery.
