Tamil Nadu legislative assembly session to stoke poll fever

Session likely to last less than a week.

Chennai: Fort St George, housing the state power corridors of Tamil Nadu is all set to be politically hyperactive for the next 10 days. With elections round the corner, all eyes are on the TN legislative assembly that convenes on Wednesday.

The last session of the current government will start with the Governor’s address and is likely to recollect the successful schemes of the state since 2011. According to confidential secretariat sources, the session is likely to last less than a week. A high-level review meeting of all district collectors and police superintendents is also under consideration and is to be chaired by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Similarly, chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni who is on a tour to the southern districts to monitor poll arrangements is also to conduct a high-level meeting with all collectors and police officials after the assembly session. Last minute transfers of officials and filling up of crucial posts of state secretaries for agriculture, energy, Hindu religious endowments and transport departments are also expected.

“As an opposition party we will try to use the session; issues like the Chembarambakkam floods, inadequate relief, Jallikattu ban are the issues we will be raising,” said a DMK functionary.

However political commentator and writer Gnani Sankaran observes that the opposition will not have any political gains in the last crucial session.

“In my observation, the last session will not be crucial for the opposition. In all the past sessions, we have seen opposition MLAs being suspended whenever they raised issues or staged a walk out and this trend will continue in this last session. The ruling party has an advantage and can go ahead with announcements and new schemes,” Gnani added.
