Trump closer to impeachment?
Interesting times lie ahead for the US President. He has been accused before Congress by his former “fixer” and lawyer, Michael Cohen, of being a conman, a racist, a cynical exploiter of his inner circle to cover up damaging allegations about his sexual shenanigans and an inveterate liar about his business interests in Russia. Many of his opponents among the Democrats are beginning to believe that the time has come to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. It is still debatable if the Cohen exposés, done by a felon pronounced guilty of perjury, and the Robert Mueller investigation report to come will constitute enough hard evidence to back an impeachment. What the revelations tend to show so far is that Trump has been the very definition of a self-serving rich man who stood for President only to promote his real estate brand and ended up in the chair of one of the most powerful men in the world.
Out here in India where we are somewhat more blasé in the knowledge that politicians do much worse things to gain an edge over rivals, such charges as pre-knowledge of the Hillary Clinton emails exposé by WikiLeaks may not seem so onerous as to bring down the CEO of a country. The truth is no leader of today could have a record free of blemishes to be able to stand up to the highest standards of probity. The world is certainly a loser for that. The inference to be drawn right now is some of these allegations are considered credible enough to merit a deeper examination and the Democrats may have no option but to start impeachment hearings to get to the bottom of it. Such is the intriguing nature of the Donald Trump saga.
