IAF Keeps Transport Fleet On Standby For Relief Operations In Nepal, C-130J Aircraft Expected To Take Off With Relief Material Today

The IAF has kept C-17, C-130J and C-295 aircraft on standby for flood relief operations in Nepal, with a C-130J expected to carry relief material.

NEW DELHI: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Wednesday said it was on "high alert" following flash floods in Nepal that could cause water levels to rise in the Gandak river and inundate border areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The NDRF said it was keeping a "close watch" on the situation and had deployed 20 teams for flood rescue operations in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Nine teams have been deployed in Bihar, including in West Champaran and Muzaffarpur districts, while 11 teams have been deployed in Uttar Pradesh, including Kushinagar district, which could be affected due to its proximity to the Gandak river.
"Additional teams are on standby for emergent requirements in case of any unforeseen situation," it said.
Officials said a few teams of NDRF rescuers had been kept ready to be airlifted to Nepal from the Indian Air Force station in Ghaziabad if the Nepal government sought assistance from India.
An advisory issued by the Central Water Commission (CWC), besides media reports, stated that there had been a sudden rise in the water level of the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal, around 160 km from the Indian border, due to suspected glacial lake outburst flood activity near the Nepal-China border.
"The flood wave is likely to travel downstream in the Gandak river. Local authorities in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh near the India-Nepal border along the Gandak river have been advised to remain alert and maintain close monitoring of the situation," the NDRF said.
Keeping in view the anticipated floods in the Gandak river following the flash flood incident in Nepal, the NDRF said it was on high alert.
"NDRF, in close coordination with the state governments of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and the CWC, is keeping a close watch on the situation.
