SC Defers Hearing on SIR to Jan 13

The pleas challenge the EC's decision to undertake the SIR exercise in several states, including Bihar, have raised significant constitutional questions on the scope of the poll panel's powers, citizenship and the right to vote

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred to January 13 the final hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states.

A Bench headed by Surya Kant, which had listed the pleas for hearing on Thursday, said the proceedings would resume on Tuesday. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the Election Commission, is scheduled to continue his arguments. Earlier, on January 6, the Election Commission informed the apex court that it has the power and authority to carry out a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, asserting that it also has a constitutional duty to ensure that no foreign nationals are enrolled as voters.

The petitions challenge the poll panel’s decision to conduct the SIR exercise in several states, including Bihar. The pleas raise significant constitutional questions relating to the scope of the Election Commission’s powers, citizenship and the right to vote.
