Assam Congress Starts Preparing Roadmap For 2026 Assembly Polls

Target BJP for not fulfilling promises of ST status to six communities

Guwahati: Congress MP and APCC chief Gaurav Gogoi who here on Sunday chaired the executive committee meeting of the party said that they focused on devising a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the party’s position ahead assembly elections 2026.

Informing that the meeting has started discussing a roadmap for 2026 assembly polls, Mr Gogogoi told reporters that it’s high time for them to gear up for a fierce political battle.

Pointing out that key grassroots feedback gathered during recent outreach programmes would be formally submitted to AICC, he said, “The people of Assam have spoken, and it is our duty to convey their voices to the top leadership. AICC in-charge Jitendra Singh will brief Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge accordingly.”

Informing that several senior AICC leaders are expected to visit Assam in the coming weeks to engage directly with the public, Mr Gogoi said that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has expressed her keen interest in visiting the state. “She told me in Parliament that she wants to return to Assam — this time, because of the warmth and affection she received during her previous visit. She is especially eager to visit Dhubri, where Congress received massive public support in the recent elections,” he said.

Mr Gogoi indicated that many prominent central party leaders would be visiting the state to meet the people, understand their issues, and help in fine-tuning the strategy of the party. He said, “Rahul Gandhi will also return to Assam soon.”

Slamming the BJP government in Assam, Mr Gogoi accused the ruling party of fostering a climate of repression. “The people of Assam will give a fitting reply to BJP’s tyranny. Congress represents courage, and we are moving ahead with that courage,” he asserted.

He also raised alarm over alleged irregularities in the state’s voter rolls and demanded a detailed debate in Parliament. “There are widespread complaints about discrepancies in the electoral list. The Election Commission appears to be concealing key facts. We demand full transparency and accountability,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress has condemned what it called “yet another deception” by the BJP-led state government over the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six indigenous communities of the state.

Assam Congress’s working president Roselina Tirkey said that the state government "has been continuously misleading the people of the Moran, Matak, Ahom, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes in the name of granting ST status” and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has “no real commitment” to Assam’s indigenous people.

Assam Congress’s general secretary Bipul Gogoi said that the truth came out in Parliament when MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain asked the Centre about the status of the ST tag demand. Mr Durga Das Uikey, minister of state for tribal affairs, informed Parliament that the Assam government had not submitted reports from two ministerial groups.
