Anantapur: Anantapur district administration is planning to start distributing subsidised groundnut seeds during this kharif season from May 24 following timely pre-southwest monsoon showers that the district has received.
Anantapur is the topmost district growing groundnut in the country. Last year, its farmers had incurred huge losses following the failure of the southwest monsoon. Crop sown over a large area in the district suffered massive damage.
This year, however, rains have been received in a timely manner. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also announced favourable rains in the upcoming southwest monsoon season in Rayalaseema, whose many parts are situated in the rain shadow zone.
Following this, the district administration has decided to sell subsidised groundnut seed from May 24 at all mandal headquarters, where groundnut sowings are more.
Collector Vinod Kumar said a seed monitoring committee has been formed to monitor distribution of groundnut seeds in view of the huge demand. Farmers have been asked to indicate to Rythu Bharosa Kendras how much seed they would like to buy.
Authorities said priority will be given to small and marginal farmers, including tenant farmers, while selling the seed. They will be selling a 30 kg bag of subsidised groundnut seed to farmers having half-acre land. K-6 and TCGS 1694 variety 30-kg seed will be available for Rs 1,710 a bag after subsidy.
Similarly, a 60 kg bag will be sold at Rs 3,420 to farmers with one acre of land and so on. Kadiri Lepaskhi variety seed 30-kg bag will be sold at a subsidised price of Rs 1,566.
AP Seeds Corporation has been entrusted with the responsibility to procure the groundnut seed and supply it to farmers who register themselves at RBKs.
