Four Rescued Tiger Cubs Succumb To Diseases Despite Vet Care

Tigress in a good health and a decision will be taken about her release to the wild

Bengaluru : All four tiger cubs reunited with their mother on November 30 after their capture in Gowdanakatte, a village of Hanagodu in Hunsur division of Mysuru district succumbed to various diseases in a span of 9-days in captivity.

The death of tiger cubs occurred despite veterinarian care in captivity. The captured tiger cubs succumbed to diseases on various dates from December 1 to 9 while the capture of tigress and her four were conducted from November 27 to November 30.

As per the report of Veterinarians attached to Chamundi Wild Animals Rehabilitation Centre under Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens after necropsy on the carcasses of the tiger cubs confirmed the first death of a female tiger cub was reported on December 1 and the cub the report stated died owing to cardiopulmonary failure and acute severe gastritis while the second tiger cub death was reported on December 5. The second tiger cub died suffering from hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and encephalitis.

In order to save the remaining two rescued tiger cubs, officials stated blood samples were drawn from the two tiger cubs and subjected for lab tests. The lab test confirmed both tiger cubs had feline panleukopenia infestation in them. The two tiger cubs were under constant vet observation and care but despite veterinarian attention to save the two went futile. A tiger cub died on December 7 and another breathed its last on December 9.

However, vets attached to Chamundi Wild Animals Rehabilitation Centre stated the health condition of tigress, a mother of four cubs, is in good health while a decision on her release back to the wild is yet to be taken.
