THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A seven-year-old boy hailing from Malappuram district died from a Shigella infection at the Kozhikode medical college hospital.
The boy, identified as Arjav, a second standard student of Malappuram AUP School, had been undergoing treatment at the medical college where he succumbed to the infection. He was admitted last Friday with symptoms of fever and severe diarrhoea. Despite receiving medication in the intensive care unit, his condition kept deteriorating, and he passed away on Monday morning.
The condition of another patient, a one-year-old child, remains critical in the intensive care unit of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
This year, Kerala has reported four deaths since January. Health department officials stated that 135 cases of Shigella have been recorded across the state since January, with Kozhikode having the highest number at 68. This marks the third death in June, while one occurred in March.
Meanwhile, health authorities have urged the public across the state to maintain strict hygiene, drink safe water, and seek immediate medical help if symptoms like fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or blood-stained stools appear.
Shigella
Shigella is a type of bacteria that causes an infection in the digestive tract, leading to symptoms like diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, and severe dehydration. It spreads quickly through poor hygiene, contaminated food, and not washing hands properly, making outbreaks more likely in crowded places.
