Scenic Mahendragiri In Odisha Set To Emerge As Confluence Of Nature And Spirituality

Towering over southern Odisha, Mahendragiri—the highest peak of the Eastern Ghats in the state—rises to an elevation of 1,501 metres (4,925 feet), making it second only to Deomali (5,486 feet). Renowned for its rich biodiversity and deep mythological roots, the mountain is regarded as an important eco-heritage site

Bhubaneswar: A 12-member delegation of Odisha legislators—11 from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one from the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD)—led by steel and mines minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, paid a two-day visit to the spiritually and ecologically significant Mahendragiri in Gajapati district to review ongoing efforts to develop the site into a major destination for pilgrims and tourists.

Towering over southern Odisha, Mahendragiri—the highest peak of the Eastern Ghats in the state—rises to an elevation of 1,501 metres (4,925 feet), making it second only to Deomali (5,486 feet). Renowned for its rich biodiversity and deep mythological roots, the mountain is regarded as an important eco-heritage site.

Other members of the delegation included minister Gokulananda Mallik, government chief whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan and legislators Nilamani Bishoyi, Uma Charan Mallick, Rupesh Panigrahi, Babu Singh, Pratap Nayak, Bijay Dalbehera, Durga Prasanna Nayak, Dusmanta Kumar Swain and Chhabi Mallick.

The visit on Sunday and Monday followed the recent inauguration of 10 eco-retreat cottages at Mahendragiri by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, marking a significant step towards eco-tourism development in the region.

“Mahendragiri is more than just a mountain—it is a living repository of mythology, spirituality and pristine natural beauty. Revered since ancient times, the sacred peak has long been a centre of penance and meditation, drawing sages, ascetics and seekers into its tranquil embrace,” minister Jena said.

Steeped in Hindu mythology, Mahendragiri is believed to be the site where Lord Parashurama performed intense austerities. The mountain finds mention in several ancient scriptures and Puranas, securing its revered place in India’s spiritual geography. Enhancing its religious significance is the ancient Shiva temple atop the hill, which attracts devotees throughout the year.

The region is dotted with several temples, including the Bhim Temple, Kunti Temple, Yudhisthir Temple, Hanuman Temple, Gokarneswar Temple and a pond called Lalita Puskarini.

“The summit comes alive during Mahashivaratri and other auspicious occasions, when pilgrims trek uphill to offer prayers amid mist-laden forests and cool mountain air. For many, the journey itself becomes an act of devotion, blending physical endurance with spiritual fulfilment,” temple priests said.

Beyond its spiritual importance, Mahendragiri enchants visitors with its breathtaking landscapes. Dense forests, rolling hills, rare medicinal plants and rich wildlife make the area a haven for nature lovers. Its pleasant climate, even during summer, further enhances its appeal as a peaceful retreat.

The mountain is also home to indigenous tribal communities, including the Sabar tribe, whose lives are intricately connected with the land and the local spiritual practices. Their customs, festivals and traditional practices reflect a harmonious coexistence with nature, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the Mahendragiri experience.

In recent years, Mahendragiri has gained strategic and developmental significance after being included in the Ramayan Circuit announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Minister Jena said the state government aims to develop Mahendragiri as a confluence of nature and spirituality, while carefully balancing development with conservation to protect the mountain’s ecological integrity and spiritual sanctity.

Standing at the crossroads of myth and modernity, Mahendragiri offers visitors a rare journey—one that rises beyond altitude into the heart of Odisha’s cultural and natural heritage.
