Committed To Comprehensive Rehabilitation, Says Himanta Sarma After Touring Flood-hit Areas
Government releases first tranche of Rs 75,000 interim relief to affected households
Guwahati: A day after visiting the flood-hit areas, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that his government was committed to ensure a structured and comprehensive rehabilitation of all the flood-affected families.
The chief minister who visited the flood-hit areas to assess the extent of the damage and prepare systematic plan to facilitate the rehabilitation of those affected said, “Yesterday, I spent the day on ground in the worst affected areas to assess the damages and lay the groundwork for a proper and well structured #AssamFloodResponse. I reassured the people of our Govt’s full support to them as they rebuild their lives and return to normalcy.”
While a vast area of Upper Assam was still grappling with the devastating impact of floods, the chief minister during his visit interacted with residents and reviewed the scale of destruction caused by the floodwaters. He assured people that the government would stand firmly with them throughout the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. He also stressed the need for a coordinated approach in restoring damaged infrastructure, rebuilding homes and reviving livelihoods.
The state government has already initiated relief and restoration measures in the affected districts, with officials carrying out damage assessments to facilitate compensation and long-term rehabilitation. Various departments have been directed to expedite the restoration of roads, bridges, electricity and drinking water supply in the affected areas.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), along with district administrations, has been monitoring the flood situation and coordinating relief operations. While water levels have receded in most areas, several villages continue to face the impact of damaged infrastructure and agricultural losses. The government has indicated that rehabilitation efforts will now shift focus from immediate relief to rebuilding essential infrastructure and helping affected families return to normal life at the earliest.
Meanwhile the Assam government has released the first tranche of interim relief of about ₹75,000 each to flood-affected households, officials said. The toll in the devastating deluge in Upper Assam rose to 85.
Families with severely damaged houses in Sivasagar, Chariadeo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts will receive Rs 15,000 per household, among other benefits being provided for the affected people in the first tranche, with total relief amounting to Rs 75,000 per household, the officials said.
