Kolkata: A day after arresting a suspected linkman of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) from East Burdwan, the state police’s special task force (STF) arrested his female associate for allegedly planning a honeytrap to target politicians for extortion.
Arpita Sarkar was arrested from Sahebganj in Jharkhand early on Saturday. She is a close associate of Hamim Mondal, who was picked up from a housing complex near Durgapur Expressway in Burdwan on Friday.
Mondal, a native of Kusumgram in Monteshwar, East Burdwan, had been working at a garments factory in Pilkhana, Howrah, for the past few years. A Burdwan court remanded him to 14 days’ police custody on Saturday. Sarkar was brought to the state and remanded by the same court to 14 days’ police custody.
The STF said the two, who had known each other for four years, were active on social media and allegedly spread radical content among youth. They are being interrogated in Kolkata.
Investigators began tracking them after the son of state minister and North Howrah BJP MLA Umesh Rai received a threat call over his alleged abduction for extortion.
STF Inspector General Gaurav Sharma said a plot had been hatched by the duo to honeytrap Mr Rai’s son. He added that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was among those they had planned to target and that reconnaissance of his movements had been carried out.
