Rs 48 lakh Cash, Rs 80 lakh FDs Sseized From Assam ACS Officer Arrested In Bribery Case

Guwahati: The sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Friday arrested a senior Assam Civil Services (ACS) officer while accepting a bribe of Rs 45000 and in course of investigation recovered Rs 48.38 lakh in cash, fixed deposit certificates worth Rs 80 lakh, more than 500 grams of gold jewellery and several financial and property-related documents,
Lachit Kumar Das, who is the Additional Director in the Directorate of Land Records and Surveys, was arrested after being caught red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 45,000 related to a land deal.
The Director of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing Mr Surendar Kumar IPS told reporters that the complainant had alleged that Das demanded Rs 1 lakh in exchange for issuing a no-objection certificate related to land sale permission. Refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate, which verified the allegations and laid a trap at the Directorate of Land Records office in Rupnagar, Guwahati. Das was caught inside his office chamber immediately after accepting part of the demanded sum. The tainted money was recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses.

During the overnight operation, vigilance sleuths recovered and seized Rs 48.38 lakh in cash from a locker inside the house. The search team also found fixed deposit certificates amounting to Rs 80 lakh in the names of Das and his family members.
Besides cash and FDs, officials said that several general life insurance and postal life insurance policies, multiple bank accounts and documents related to landed properties were recovered during the search.
Das is a senior ACS officer and had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur and Additional Deputy Commissioner in Hojai. The investigation is still ongoing, and more details are expected to come out.
