Bhubaneswar: A senior prison official in Odisha's Sambalpur district has come under scrutiny after videos purportedly showing him socialising with former inmates surfaced on social media, triggering allegations of misconduct and possible abuse of official position.
The official, identified as Rairakhol Jail chief warder Dilip Kumar Das, was allegedly seen moving around the Rairakhol area with two former prisoners—Akhilananda Mishra and Sunil Shankar, both residents of Bihar who were arrested in connection with alleged ganja trafficking cases and were recently released on bail.
According to local reports, the chief warder was also seen recording videos on a public road, with his behaviour leading some witnesses to allege that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The videos have since sparked widespread criticism and raised questions over professional conduct within the prison administration.
More serious allegations have also surfaced against the prison official. Sources claim that while the two accused were lodged in Rairakhol Jail, Das allegedly arranged outside food, provided special facilities and supplied items prohibited inside the prison by bypassing established jail protocols.
It has further been alleged that the chief warder maintained close contact with the inmates and even facilitated legal assistance to help them secure bail. Investigators are also examining allegations that he accepted illegal gratification from affluent inmates in exchange for preferential treatment inside the jail.
According to the allegations, the purported bribe money was routed through the bank account of a local associate identified as Mantu in an attempt to avoid direct financial scrutiny. However, these allegations are yet to be independently verified.
Responding to the controversy, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said an inquiry has been initiated.
“There are clear rules prohibiting personal relationships between prison officials and inmates. We will verify the authenticity of the videos and examine all allegations. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry,” the SP said.
