Parents Get Justice In 2019 Dowry Death Case
The conviction came over five years after Nivedita’s tragic death.
Hyderabad:In a long-awaited justice for a grieving family, the 3rd Additional District Sessions Court in LB Nagar on Tuesday convicted three members of a family for their role in the 2019 dowry death of 29-year-old Nivedita, who died by suicide after months of relentless abuse.
The court awarded life imprisonment to her husband Raghu Prakash and sentenced his parents, Nimmi Rani and Gyan Prakash, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment each. The conviction came over five years after Nivedita’s tragic death.
According to the complaint by her father P. Pridhvi Raj, Nivedita married Raghu in July 2018. Despite giving 45 tolas of gold and 5 kg of silver as dowry, her husband and in-laws allegedly began demanding more, subjecting her to continuous verbal abuse, physical assault and mental torture. Raghu even secretly recorded videos of her while she was asleep and used them to threaten that he would share them online if further dowry demands were not met.
On the night of March 2, 2019, yet another episode of abuse and threats from her husband and in-laws took place. After this, Nivedita called her father at around 11.30 pm to share her ordeal. Her parents rushed to her house and pleaded with the accused not to harm her. The next morning, unable to bear the humiliation and trauma, she died by suicide.
The Vanasthalipuram police registered a case and promptly filed the chargesheet. The court's verdict brings a measure of closure to the family, holding those responsible for her death accountable.
Hyd woman stranded in Oman after job scam
Hyderabad:A 48-year-old woman from Kalapathar has been left stranded in Muscat, Oman, after falling victim to a job scam. Sajida Begum had been promised a housemaid job but was instead subjected to harassment and forced labour, according to her daughter Habeeba Begum, who has appealed to the ministry of external affairs (MEA) to secure her rescue.
In a letter sent to external affairs minister S. Jaishankar on June 18, Habeeba said her mother, facing financial distress, was approached by a local agent named Sameer. Lured by the promise of a job, Sajida flew to Muscat on June 20 but was forced to work in two households under poor conditions.
When Sajida requested to return home, her employer allegedly demanded `2 lakh, claiming it was the amount paid to the agent to "buy" her. She is now reportedly being confined by a travel agent and not allowed to leave the premises. She has, however, managed to stay in contact with her daughter via WhatsApp.
Habeeba has urged both the MEA and the Indian embassy in Muscat to act swiftly to ensure her mother’s safety and repatriation. The letter was posted on platform X by MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan.
