Guwahati: Two persons, a woman and a man belonging to the Meitei community were injured when two IEDs planted near an abandoned house of a Meitei family in Manipur's Bishnupur district went off on Monday morning.

Condemning the bomb blasts, several civil society and student organisations, including the Indigenous People Organisation Manipur (IPOM), the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Yelhoumee Kanba Lup, and other like-minded groups, have jointly called for a 24-hour total shutdown across Manipur beginning from Monday midnight.

Police said that the first explosion took place at around 5.30 am in an abandoned house where local residents gathered following the incident.

The second explosion in which two persons got injured occurred nearly 200 metres away around 8.45 a.m. The local residents had gathered in the area to register their protest against the explosion which the local residents said was aimed at disrupting the ongoing rehabilitation process of those displaced.

Two persons, identified as Sanatomba Singh and Indubala Devi, sustained splinter injuries on their right legs. They were admitted to a government hospital and are stated to be out of danger.

Security sources suspected involvement of miscreants from Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district with which Bishnupur shares the boundary.

However Kuki Zo Council, engaged in talks with the government, in a statement condemned the attack. The council urged the authorities and the security forces to maintain security in the area.

It is significant that the areas along Bishnupur-Churachandpur peripheral areas witnessed fresh tension after more than 100 displaced Meitei families returned to the area recently. On December 16, unidentified persons had opened fire targeting the families at Torbung area.
