Adilabad:Mancherial police on Monday arrested five ambulance drivers who took advantage of voluntary donation of organs by brain dead patients under Jeevan Daan scheme to get commissions from private hospitals in Hyderabad.
Police said these drivers passed on information about brain dead persons and availability of their organs to private hospitals in Hyderabad.
Their racket got busted when R. Srikanth of Chennur, who worked as an operation theatre assistant, hit a tractor while riding his bike and suffered a head injury. His parents shifted Srikanth to a private hospital in Mancherial in an ambulance and then to Hyderabad on August 6.
After doctors confirmed that Srikanth was brain dead, his family members donated his organs to needy patients undergoing treatment in different hospitals.
The ambulance drivers collected commissions for shifting the brain dead persons to private hospitals and also convincing family members to donate organs of the person under the Jeevan Daan scheme.
