Bhubaneswar: A major accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning after a coach of the Mahima Gosain Express (Train No. 20831 Sambalpur–Shalimar Express) derailed shortly after departing from Sambalpur City Railway Station in Odisha. The incident occurred around 9.22 am, just minutes after the train left the station at 9.18 AM.

According to East Coast Railway officials, the rear trolley of a general coach—located adjacent to the guard van—went off the tracks on the Sambalpur City–Sambalpur stretch. Fortunately, the train was moving at a very low speed at the time of the derailment, preventing any injuries or casualties.

Railway sources said that after a brief halt for inspection and safety checks, the train resumed its journey towards Sambalpur.

Senior railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), rushed to the site to assess the situation. Restoration work was immediately taken up to ensure that normal rail operations could resume on the affected section.

An inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Meanwhile, train services in the region are being closely monitored to ensure safety and avoid further disruption, railway officials added.
