Bhubaneswar: At least five people were killed and eight others injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a Hyva truck in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Monday, police said.
The accident occurred near Barada Behera Tanki Chhak under Jenapur police limits when the Mahindra Bolero vehicle, carrying a group returning from a wedding, collided with the truck from behind. The impact of the crash was severe, leaving the SUV mangled and trapping several occupants inside.
All the victims were residents of Purusottampur Sabara Sahi village under Badachana block. They were on their way back from a marriage ceremony in Keonjhar district when the mishap took place.
Five persons died on the spot, while eight others—including the driver—sustained injuries. The injured include two children and a woman, raising concerns about the condition of some passengers.
Local residents, along with police personnel, rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations. The injured were initially shifted to the Badachana Community Health Centre for treatment.
Police said efforts were undertaken to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic movement on the stretch, which remained disrupted for some time following the accident.
An investigation was initiated to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest possible over-speeding or driver negligence, though officials said all angles are being examined.
