Luxury car reseller arrested in Guj
Hyderabad: The DRI's Ahmedabad unit had earlier this week arrested a Hyderabad-based car lounge showroom owner, Basharath Khan Pathan, in a luxury cars import scam. The accused allegedly produced fake invoices and related documents to evade customs duty. A duty evasion of `25 crore has come to light, officials said.
According to available information, Basharath, runs a car showroom in Gachibowli. He had started off by selling small cars and eventually started selling high-end luxury vehicles.
The scam involved purchasing high-end cars from the USA and Japan and shipping them to Dubai and Sri Lanka. There the cars would be converted from left-hand drive (LHD) to right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles, the kind used in India, apart from other modifications.
For importing them to India, the accused would reportedly use fraudulent documents, undervaluing the cars to evade customs duties.
During the investigation, it was found that around 30 luxury cars were imported into India in a similar fashion.
Basharath reportedly imported eight such cars, with a customs duty evasion of `7 crore. More importers involved in the scam are suspected to be based across the country, including in cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.
The DRI is looking for customers of these cars. Meanwhile, Basharath was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Ahmedabad.
