Childless Odisha Couple Dies After Consuming ‘Medicine’ Given By Sorcerer
A childless couple in Odisha’s Kandhamal district died after allegedly consuming an unidentified concoction given by a sorcerer who claimed it would help them conceive. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
In a tragic incident linked to superstition and unsafe traditional practices, a childless couple died after allegedly consuming a medicinal concoction provided by a local sorcerer in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Lalita Kanhar and her husband, Kanhu Kanhar, residents of Nedipanga village under Gocchapada police limits in Kandhamal.
According to family members and local sources, the couple had been married for several years but had no children. In the hope of conceiving, they reportedly approached a sorcerer in the Baliguda area, who gave them an unidentified substance, claiming it would help them have a child.
Soon after consuming the purported medicine on Monday, both fell seriously ill. They were initially taken to the District Headquarters Hospital at Phulbani, where Lalita Kanhar died during treatment.
As Kanhu Kanhar’s condition worsened, he was shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur for advanced treatment. However, he too succumbed while undergoing treatment, sources said.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation following allegations made by the family members. Efforts are underway to trace the sorcerer, who is reportedly absconding.
The local health authorities urged people to seek treatment only from qualified medical professionals and avoid relying on unscientific remedies.
