Woman kills toddler and then ends her life

Hyderabad:A 36-year-old woman allegedly killed her three-year-old daughter and died by suicide, suspecting the two had contracted rabies, in Mahbubnagar, on Monday. The incident came to light on Tuesday.

According to Mahbubnagar II Town sub-inspector K. Vijay, the deceased, Yashoda, was residing in Monappagutta, with her husband Naresh, an electrician, a six-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.

The incident occurred around 8 am when Naresh was gone for work and her son was playing outside. Yashoda allegedly smothered her daughter and later died by suicide. When Naresh called home, there was no response. He alerted a neighbour, who entered the house and checked, informed Naresh about the incident. Naresh then called the police.

Police learnt that in June this year, she was inflicted with a skin disease and was constantly watching content related to rabies due to dog bites. “She remembered that she had kept some dry fruits out in the air so it would not get infested by insects. She had come across a few dogs trying to eat them. Unaware then, she had mixed them in the food. After getting inflicted with a skin disease, she thought consuming those dry fruits may have caused her to contract rabies,” Mahbubnagar II Town inspector Mohd Ijaaz said.

As a result of this stress, her family got vaccinated but it did not help. Counselling by her father Panduranga also was to no avail. “Before dying by suicide, she wrote with a chalkpiece on the doors of the room where their bodies were found, about her anxiety related to the disease and ended the note with ‘save my son and husband’,” the sub-inspector said.
