Youth Allegedly Threatens Villagers With Axe During Anti-Liquor Protest In Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Tension gripped a village in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Wednesday after a youth allegedly brandished an axe and threatened residents during an anti-liquor protest meeting.

The incident occurred at Malikapur panchayat under Mangalpur police limits, where villagers had assembled to protest against the alleged rise in liquor-related disturbances in the area and oppose the renewal of a government-authorised liquor shop licence.

According to local sources, the meeting was underway when a youth reportedly arrived at the venue carrying an axe and attempted to intimidate participants. A video purportedly showing the incident later went viral on social media, triggering panic among residents and drawing sharp reactions from the local community.

Villagers alleged that illegal liquor trade and associated social problems have increased in the locality due to the presence of the licensed liquor outlet. They claimed the situation has adversely affected the social environment and public peace in the village.

The residents have submitted written complaints to the District Collector and officials of the excise department, urging authorities not to renew the licence of the liquor shop.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation, while villagers demanded stringent action against the accused youth for allegedly threatening the gathering with a weapon.

Jajpur SDPO Prasanta Majhi said the matter was being thoroughly investigated and assured that appropriate legal action would be taken if the allegations were substantiated.

“A youth was allegedly roaming around with an axe and abusing people in slang language. Police received information about the incident after the meeting and rushed to the spot. However, no one was present there when the police team arrived,” the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) said.

“We are working to establish the identity and address of the youth. If the incident is found to have occurred, appropriate legal action will be taken,” he added.

The viral video has intensified public concern over law and order during social protest gatherings in the district.
