World Leaders Gather In New Delhi On September 12-13 As India Hosts BRICS Summit
India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, bringing together leaders and senior representatives from the grouping's member and partner countries.
Among the prominent leaders scheduled to attend are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are also expected to participate.
Here is a look at the prominent leaders attending the summit:
Xi Jinping — China
Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the summit and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Xi has served as China's president since 2013. His most recent visit to India was in 2019, when he met Modi for an informal summit in Mamallapuram near Chennai.
He had earlier visited Goa in 2016 to attend the BRICS Summit and made his first visit to India in September 2014, when he held extensive talks with Modi.
Vladimir Putin — Russia
Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the summit and hold bilateral discussions with Modi.
Putin has been president of Russia since 2012, while Russia is one of the founding members of BRICS. He visited India in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Cyril Ramaphosa — South Africa
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will participate in the summit and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Modi.
Ramaphosa was re-elected president in June 2024 following South Africa's national and provincial elections. He first visited India as president in January 2019 as the State Guest of Honour for the country's 70th Republic Day celebrations.
Masoud Pezeshkian — Iran
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will attend the summit and hold bilateral talks with Modi.
Pezeshkian has served as Iran's president since 2024. His participation comes against the backdrop of the ongoing situation in West Asia, making his visit closely watched in New Delhi and Washington.
Abdel Fattah El-Sisi — Egypt
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will attend the summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Modi.
El-Sisi paid a State visit to India in January 2023 and was the Chief Guest at the 74th Republic Day celebrations. He had earlier visited India in October 2015 for the 3rd India-Africa Forum Summit and again in September 2016 on a State visit.
Prabowo Subianto — Indonesia
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will attend the summit, highlighting the close bilateral partnership and centuries-old civilisational ties between India and Indonesia.
Prabowo visited India in 2025 as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations. Modi last visited Indonesia in July 2026.
Abiy Ahmed Ali — Ethiopia
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali will participate in the summit and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Modi.
Abiy became Ethiopia's prime minister in April 2018.
Anwar Ibrahim — Malaysia
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will participate in the summit and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Modi.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud — Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud will represent the kingdom at the summit.
Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan — UAE
Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, will attend the summit and is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Modi.
He visited India in February 2026 to participate in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi and had earlier visited the country in September 2024.
Mauro Vieira — Brazil
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will attend the summit. India and Brazil have maintained a strong partnership, including cooperation on issues concerning the Global South.
Other leaders
According to the list shared by the Ministry of External Affairs, other participants include Uganda's Vice President Jessica Alupo, Nigeria's Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
BRICS Expansion
BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while Indonesia joined in 2025.
Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam became BRICS partner countries last year.
The grouping has emerged as an influential forum of major emerging economies. Its 11 members represent around 49.5 per cent of the world's population, around 40 per cent of global GDP and approximately 26 per cent of global trade.
India's BRICS Chairship
India assumed the BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026, marking its fourth time leading the grouping after previous chairships in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said India's chairship is guided by the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability", reflecting Modi's vision of a people-centric approach rooted in the spirit of "Humanity First".
The year 2026 also marks 20 years since the establishment of BRICS.
