India Issues Advisory As Protests Rock Italy

NEW DELHI: India on Monday issued an advisory urging its nationals in Italy to exercise caution and avoid protest-hit areas as demonstrations against the rising cost of living spread to the country following similar unrest in France.

The Indian Embassy in Rome posted on X, "There were protests and demonstrations last week in some Italian cities. We advise Indian nationals to exercise caution, avoid crowded areas & locations where protests are taking place and follow local news about such events."

It said Indian nationals could contact the embassy in Rome at +39 331 614 2085 or the Consulate General in Milan at +39 3881647527 in case of emergencies.

According to international media reports, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to hold an emergency security meeting following violent clashes between police and protesters in Milan.

More than 5,000 people reportedly gathered in Milan over the weekend to protest against the rising cost of living. Police used tear gas and water cannons after protesters, many wearing masks, hurled paving stones, bins and chairs at officers.

"To demonstrate is a right. To lay our cities to waste is not," Meloni was quoted as saying, accusing "hooligans" of exploiting the protests to "sow chaos".
