Husband, Believed To Be Prime Suspect, Reportedly Surrenders
Guwahati: In a shocking and gruesome discovery, the severed head of a 25-year-old married woman was found packed in a polythene bag inside a refrigerator at a flat in Assam’s Basisthapur area in Guwahati.
The victim has been identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami. Police investigators described the killing as extremely brutal, stating that the accused allegedly severed her head, placed it inside a polythene bag and stored it in the refrigerator. Her fingers were also allegedly cut off.
Police on Monday said that the remains of allegedly murdered woman were discovered on Sunday evening after family members or neighbours raised an alarm and alerted the police.
Police said that Riya’s husband, Ramanujan Goswami, is the prime accused in the case. He surrendered before police and confessed to the crime.
A senior police official said that preliminary investigations suggest that the crime took place around 48 hours before the body was discovered.
Riya and Ramanujan had married around six months ago and were residing together in the flat, according to police.
Police recovered the victim’s body on Sunday night after neighbours alerted authorities about a foul smell emanating from the apartment. Investigating teams also seized a weapon from the premises, which is suspected to have been used in the crime.
The body was subsequently sent to Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case of murder and are treating the incident as a homicide. Forensic teams have been called in to examine the scene and collect evidence. The refrigerator and the polythene bag have been seized for further investigation.
Assam Police officials said preliminary inquiries are underway to establish the motive.
The investigators are also questioning family members, neighbours and others known to the victim. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the locality. Local residents expressed horror and demanded swift action from the police.
