Will Odisha Witness A ‘West Bengal Model’ Political Realignment? BJP Signals Possibility Of More Legislators Joining Party

Political observers caution against viewing the possibility of defections as an imminent development: Reports

BHUBANESWAR: A fresh political debate has emerged in Odisha following indications from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state that legislators from opposition parties could join its ranks in the coming months, raising questions over whether the state could witness a political realignment similar to developments seen in neighbouring West Bengal.

The discussion gained momentum after Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal Tuesday stated that some legislators from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress may join the BJP in the future and that the party would be willing to welcome them.

Samal’s remarks have triggered speculation in political circles about the BJP’s long-term strategy to strengthen its position in Odisha after coming to power in the state. Observers believe the party which has 79 MLAs in State Assembly may be seeking to expand its organisational and legislative strength by attracting leaders and elected representatives from rival parties.

The developments have drawn comparisons with West Bengal, where several legislators and leaders had either defected from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) or formed dissident groups before eventually moving closer to the ruling BJP.

Political analysts say Samal’s statement could be interpreted as a strategic message aimed at encouraging leaders dissatisfied within their respective parties to consider switching allegiance. If internal discontent, leadership challenges or factionalism emerge within the opposition camp, the BJP could attempt to capitalise on the situation.

However, BJD leaders dismissed the BJP's claims as mere political posturing, alleging that the ruling party was attempting to divert public attention from its own internal discord and governance shortcomings.

“The BJD remains as strong and united as ever. The BJP is indulging in political messaging solely to deflect attention from its failure to provide good governance and the growing discontent within its own ranks,” said Sahoo.

Political observers caution against viewing the possibility of defections as an imminent development. Instead, they see the BJP’s remarks as part of a broader political strategy designed to project confidence and signal openness to leaders seeking a new political platform.

“The coming months are expected to be crucial in determining whether Odisha witnesses any significant political restructuring. Much will depend on the internal dynamics of the BJD and Congress, the loyalty of their legislators, and the BJP’s efforts to consolidate its position across the state,” said Prasanna Mohanty, a political analyst.
