Wife's Outreach to Rahul Gandhi Over Fast Drew No Positive Response: Wangchuk
Activist Sonam Wangchuk says his wife Gitanjali Angmo sought Rahul Gandhi's intervention to help end his 26-day hunger strike but received no positive response.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk has said his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, had reached out to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking his participation in ending Wangchuk's 26-day hunger strike, but received no positive response.
In an interview, Wangchuk said he and his wife had considered having Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, help him break the fast. Angmo had worked to facilitate the move, he said.
"She didn't get a positive response," Wangchuk said.
He made the remarks while defending his wife against criticism over comments she subsequently made about the Congress leadership. According to Wangchuk, Angmo's remarks came after she was disappointed by the unsuccessful outreach to Gandhi.
Wangchuk also expressed dissatisfaction with the response from Opposition leaders during his agitation, saying only a few visited him at Jantar Mantar and several arrived late in the protest.
The activist had undertaken the hunger strike in support of youth-led protests over alleged irregularities in the examination system. He said his demands went beyond the resignation of a minister and included wider reforms and accountability.
Wangchuk ended his hunger strike on July 24 after 26 days, in the presence of Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh.
