West Bengal: Taslima To Visit Kolkata After Almost 20 Years
Nasreen was forced to leave Kolkata on November 21, 2007, after protests by a section of Muslim community erupted across the city over her autobiography, ‘Dwikhondito’: Reports

KOLKATA: Nearly two decades after her forced departure from the City of Joy, controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen, who has been living in exile in India, is set to visit here in a comeback. She will attend a cultural event at Rabindra Sadan on August 1 where West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is likely to be present.
Nasreen was forced to leave Kolkata on November 21, 2007, after protests by a section of Muslim community erupted across the city over her autobiography, ‘Dwikhondito’, when West Bengal was under Left Front rule. The Army had to be deployed to restore normalcy.
The event will be organised jointly by three forums – Secular Mission, HRBFF and Poshimbonger Jonyo – themed on “After 20 years, fiery icon of anti-fundamentalism protest Taslima Nasreen, a poet and author, is returning to a free West Bengal.”
Osman Mullick, a lawyer of the Calcutta High Court and one of the event organisers, wrote on his Facebook page, “She is arriving after defeating all the reactionary forces. We were, are and will be associated with her struggle.”
