KOLKATA: A day after the furious mob attack on Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee at Halishahar in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, chief minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the same area on Monday and met the family of deceased TMC worker Birju Keot.
The CM announced departmental actions on two cops of Halishahar police station in presence of state director general of police SN Gupta for the custodial death of Keot on August 8 and also the state government's compensation including a job for the victim's family.
Sharing details of actions on the errant cops, Mr Adhikari informed that the investigating officer of the case against Keot has been suspended while the inspector-in-charge of the Halishahar police station has been ‘closed’ at the police line for their suspected role in the custodial death.
The CM later added that district magistrate (North 24 Parganas) Shilpi Gourisaria has been entrusted to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the death. He also offered a compensation of ₹10 lakhs and a job of the home minister’s attendant to the victim's family.
“The wife of the deceased will get monthly assistance of ₹15,000 for one year before her appointment as a Group D staff in the state government. I have conveyed my gratitude to the family for reposing faith in our government instead of giving anyone a chance to play politics over the death,” Mr Adhikari said.
He claimed, “The former CM came here. But the family of the deceased did not meet her” while refuting Ms Banerjee's allegations of BJP workers' role in the attack on her on Sunday. “She came here without informing the police. But I didn't find any of our party workers in the photos of the incident,” the CM argued.
