Warned by Suvendu, Kabir Drops Babar's Name From His Mosque Project

“You can build not one but a hundred masjids on your land": Reports

KOLKATA: A day after West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari's warning of not allowing the use of the name of Mughal emperor Babar in the state, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir abandoned his plan to name his under-construction Babri Masjid-styled mosque in Murshidabad after the invader.

Asked about Mr Kabir's initiative, Mr Adhikari had said on Wednesday, “You can build not one but a hundred masjids on your land. There is no problem with it. Mandir, Masjid, Church, Gurudwara come under individual rights given by the constitution. But Babar did not belong to India. He was a Lootera.”

He then told the AJUP chief, “You will not get permission if Babar’s name is written. Since you are at it, you will have to face its consequences. Your plan has neither been approved nor have the required documents. You will however get them instantly. I have given instructions to the district magistrate. But Babar's name has to be removed.”

On Thursday, Mr Kabir said, “I will follow Mr Adhikari's decision. Let the construction of the masjid be completed first. Then we will rethink its name.”
