Vice-Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan Named Western Navy Commander

Sanjay Vatsayan has commanded Coast Guard ship C-05, missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri.

New Delhi: Vice-Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has been appointed Western Navy Commander, succeeding Vice-Admiral Krishna Swaminathan who has been named Chief of Naval Staff.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, Vice-Admiral Vatsayan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, and a specialist in gunnery and missile systems.

During his career spanning over three decades, he has held various command, operational and staff assignments. His sea tenures include service onboard several frontline warships, including as part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore and INS Nishank.

He has commanded Coast Guard ship C-05, missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri.

In February 2020, he took over as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, overseeing operational deployments and exercises.

His staff assignments include roles as joint director and director of personnel (policy), director of naval plans (perspective planning) and principal director of naval plans at Naval Headquarters.

Prior to his current role as Vice-Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (Operations).
