UTKALIKA – A Show of Modern Art: Celebrating India’s artistic legacy in Bhubaneswar
UTKALIKA presents a curated selection of masterpieces from the NGMA, Mumbai Branch, featuring works from some of India’s most iconic artists

Bhubaneswar: Temple city Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is currently pulsating with creativity and artistic expression, thanks to the spectacular exhibition “UTKALIKA – A Show of Modern Art.”
Organised by the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, in collaboration with the Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA), Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar, this exceptional showcase was inaugurated on January 6, 2025, and is set to continue until February 28, 2025.
Held in conjunction with the 18th Bharatiya Pravasi Divas, which brought together the Indian diaspora from January 8 to 10, 2025, this exhibition is not just an art show but a cultural extravaganza celebrating the evolution of modern and contemporary Indian art.
A VISUAL JOURNEY THROUGH INDIA’S ARTISTIC HERITAGE
UTKALIKA presents a curated selection of masterpieces from the NGMA, Mumbai Branch, featuring works from some of India’s most iconic artists. The exhibition beautifully captures the country’s artistic journey, showcasing bold and experimental creations by the legendary Progressive Artists Group alongside evocative contemporary expressions.
Visitors are welcomed into a world of vibrant canvases and thought-provoking compositions, featuring the geometric abstractions of S. H. Raza, the cultural vibrancy of M. F. Hussain, and the provocative styles of F. N. Souza. Other luminaries like Tyeb Mehta, V. S. Gaitonde, Ram Kumar, and Akbar Padamsee also grace the exhibition, alongside works by early 19th-century pioneers who laid the foundation for modern Indian art.
Each artwork narrates a story, reflecting the diverse cultural and spiritual essence of India. The exhibition seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, highlighting the rich heritage and evolving identity of Indian art.
Celebrating Indian Roots and Spirituality
UTKALIKA stands out for its thematic focus on reconnecting with India’s cultural and spiritual roots through art. It is more than just a collection of paintings; it is a narrative of India’s historical and cultural journey. From traditional motifs to avant-garde creations, the exhibition explores the dynamic relationship between past and present, tradition and innovation.
Dr Sanjeev Kishor Goutam, Director General of NGMA, New Delhi, and the visionary behind this initiative, explained, “UTKALIKA is not merely an exhibition; it is a celebration of India’s rich artistic legacy. It seeks to inspire creativity, foster learning, and initiate a dialogue between tradition and modernity.”
A Hub for Art Lovers, Scholars, and Students
The exhibition is designed to be a melting pot of ideas and interactions, attracting art lovers, students, and scholars alike. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the adventurous journey of modern Indian art and its impact on the global stage.
Kshitish Chandra Das, the programme coordinator, emphasised the significance of such cultural initiatives, stating, “Bhubaneswar, with its vibrant cultural heritage, is the ideal location for this exhibition. It bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary art, providing visitors with a holistic experience.”
The exhibition also resonates with the ongoing cultural renaissance in Odisha.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has appealed to the Government of India for establishing a new branch of NGMA in Bhubaneswar stating that such an initiative will provide a golden platform for Odia artists while boosting international tourism in the state.
“UTKALIKA – A Show of Modern Art is more than just an exhibition; it is a celebration of Indian art’s spirit and diversity. It invites visitors on a visual and intellectual journey, offering a rare glimpse into the masterpieces that have shaped India’s artistic identity and continue to inspire generations,” says Dr Arun Kumar Nayak, a famous Odia playwright and art critic.
