Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Temple Bans Life-Size Garlands

The devotees usually offer the huge and heavy garlands weighing 10 kg-15 kg each through the priests, which are feared to cause erosion in the sacred Jyotirlinga, the official said.

Bhopal: Devotees visiting the Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh will be barred from offering ‘life-size garland’, weighing more than 10 kg, to the presiding deity of the shrine, from January one, 2026.

The directive has been issued by the temple management committee headed by the shrine administrator Pratham Kaushik.

The move is aimed at protecting the Jyotirlinga of the shrine from getting eroded, an official of the temple management committee said on Wednesday.

The devotees usually offer the huge and heavy garlands weighing 10 kg-15 kg each through the priests, which are feared to cause erosion in the sacred Jyotirlinga, the official said.

“We have started making announcements through mikes in the temple to create awareness among the visiting devotees in this regard. Even the shops selling puja materials and garlands near the temple have been asked not to make or sell such garlands”, the temple management committee officer said.

In another development, the temple management committee is toying with the idea of enforcing dress code for the priests of the shrine.

The dress code is currently applied to the temple staff and it will now be extended to the priests of the shrine, the officer said.
