Guwahati: Two pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) were killed after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Thursday night.
Defence sources said the twin-seat aircraft had taken off from the Jorhat Air Force Station for a routine sortie when it lost communication with ground control at about 7.42 pm.
Officials said the aircraft could not be tracked after that and was later found to have crashed in a remote hilly area of Karbi Anglong, about 60 km from Jorhat.
In a statement on Friday, the IAF identified the pilots as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.
“The Su-30MKI which was on a training mission crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, approx 60 km from Jorhat. Search operations are underway,” the IAF said in a statement.
The aircraft’s last communication with ground control was recorded at 7.42 pm shortly after it took off from Jorhat.
Inducted into the IAF in the early 2000s, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI is among the frontline combat aircraft in the fleet. Developed in Russia, the twin-engine, multi-role fighter jet is designed for air superiority and ground attack missions and is known by the Nato reporting name “Flanker”.
