Speeding hatchback crashes into workers installing divider grilles; three others injured

Two labourers were killed and three others injured after a speeding hatchback lost control and hit workers near Shri Ram Chowk on the Dwarka Expressway.
Two labourers were killed, while three others, including the driver of a speeding hatchback, were injured after the car went out of control and hit the workers near Shri Ram Chowk along the Dwarka Expressway early Thursday, police said. The accident occurred when the labourers were installing iron grilles to secure the divider near Shriram Chowk.
After positioning the grille, two of them were tightening the screws while the other two stood holding it in place when they saw a white Chevrolet Beat approaching from Delhi direction and going out of control.
The car, allegedly driven by a 20-year-old Delhi University student, ploughed straight into the youths who were standing by the crash barrier, leaving two youths dead on the spot, police said.
The other two workers leapt towards the green belt along the middle of the expressway to save their lives.
The car then came to a halt after crashing into a wall, leaving its driver with serious injuries, police said.
Locals nearby rushed to the scene and informed the police, following which the injured, including the car driver, were taken to a nearby hospital.
"Both bodies were sent to the mortuary, while the injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital. The families of all those involved have been informed, and their arrival is awaited. A further probe is underway, and action will be taken as per the law," a senior police officer of the Bajghera police station said.
Eyewitnesses claimed that despite the work being conducted on a busy, high-speed expressway, no robust safety measures were put in place, and that neither reflective warning signs nor proper barricading were installed at the site.
The deceased were identified as Bijendra and Pappu, natives of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.
The injured workers were identified as Satish Chand and Ram Kumar, while the car driver was identified as Vedan Khanna, a 20-year-old Delhi University student. He was referred to Fortis Hospital after receiving first aid.
The police have impounded the car and initiated an investigation.
