TVK Allots TN Rajya Sabha Seat to Congress

Sources indicated that Praveen Chakravarthy, chairman of the Congress data and analytics cell, is a frontrunner for the nomination.

New Delhi: The TVK-led alliance has allotted its Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu to the Congress for the election scheduled on June 18.

Sources indicated that Praveen Chakravarthy, chairman of the Congress data and analytics cell, is a frontrunner for the nomination. He had earlier advocated an alliance with TVK ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and is learnt to have held preliminary discussions with its leaders. Chakravarthy had also expressed the view after the elections that not aligning with TVK was a mistake. Prior to the polls, he was seen to be at odds with the then ruling DMK.

Party sources, however, said senior leaders favoured continuing the alliance with the DMK, citing its role as a long-standing ally of the Congress and a key constituent of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc. DMK president M.K. Stalin had earlier backed Rahul Gandhi as a candidate for the Prime Minister’s post from the opposition.

With this allocation, the Congress is set to secure its seventh Rajya Sabha seat in the current round of elections, including three from Karnataka and one each from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand.
