Truck Carrying Liquor Falls into Crater After Road Collapses in Rain-Hit Gurugram
Unprecedented rainfall triggers road cave-in on Southern Peripheral Road; viral video shows overturned truck
A truck carrying liquor plunged into a massive crater on Wednesday night after a section of the Southern Peripheral Road in Gurugram caved in, following intense rainfall across the Delhi-NCR region. The incident occurred around 10:30 PM and caused significant disruption to traffic. The crater reportedly formed moments before the accident.
The truck, unable to halt in time, overturned and remained lodged in the pit. A video of the mishap quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention. The truck driver escaped with minor injuries and later recorded his statement with the police. According to initial reports, the collapse was triggered by water accumulation after unprecedented rainfall in the area.
The affected road section had recently undergone maintenance work related to a sewage pipeline, raising questions about its structural integrity. A detailed technical inspection has been initiated, and a report is awaited. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gurugram received 133 mm of rainfall within 12 hours on Wednesday, including 103 mm in just 90 minutes.
The downpour led to widespread waterlogging and traffic gridlocks in several key areas, including Basai, Golf Course Extension Road, Rajiv Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Sadar Bazaar, and Bus Adda Road. Subhash Chowk saw water levels rise to 2.5 feet, leaving commuters stranded till 2:00 AM. The Narsinghpur stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and multiple underpasses were also submerged.
Authorities issued advisories urging commuters to work from home or avoid non-essential travel. Gurugram Traffic Police cautioned of prolonged disruptions, while the IMD issued an Orange Alert, forecasting continued heavy to very heavy rain over the next 24 to 48 hours.
