TMC MP Hints At His Fellows To Revolt After Party MLAs
“I have never seen around 60 MLAs leave in such a short span of time. What I am saying is that a similar reaction is expected in the Lok Sabha too”: Rajya Sabha parliamentarian Sukhendu Sekhar Roy

Kolkata: Trinamul Congress veteran and three-time Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who recently predicted that Mamata Banerjee's party would "cease to exist in two years" after its ouster from power in West Bengal, indicated on Friday that the majority of the TMC MLAs' rebellion against their top leadership could now affect their party MPs as well. The TMC has 29 Lok Sabha MPs and 13 Rajya Sabha MPs.
Roy told a TV channel that the scale and speed of the revolt of the TMC MLAs were unprecedented. He even predicted similar political rebellion among the TMC members of Parliament in the coming months. “I have never seen around 60 MLAs leave in such a short span of time. A similar reaction is expected in the Lok Sabha as well,” he said.
The TMC veteran did not rule out the possibility of the party's Rajya MPs making a similar clamour. “How can I say what will happen tomorrow?… So far no one has contacted me. We will cross the bridge when it comes,” he said.
Roy further pointed out that the crisis hit the TMC two years ago, when it was in power, after the rape and murder of a young doctor on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The senior TMC leader revealed that he warned his party about the impending disintegration at the time of the R.G. Kar case. “What is happening now does not surprise me at all. I had earlier cautioned that the party would eventually break apart. The process has started,” he observed.
Roy disclosed that his ties with the TMC have been reduced to a mere formality. “Physically, I am still with the TMC, but mentally I am not. Why should I remain with people accused of corruption and wrongdoing?” he wondered.
Besides Roy, four-time Barasat TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had come out against the party leadership.
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee's trusted lieutenant and party MLA Firhad Hakim resigned as Kolkata mayor in the afternoon. He recently conveyed his wish to the TMC supremo to quit the post and got her nod.
After his resignation, Hakim, who recently attended chief minister Suvendu Adhikari's administrative review meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna, said, “When I was the mayor, I worked with guts. I can't do that now. I don't want to dishonour the chair and the iconic figures who held it once. There is no point in clinging to the chair without a sword and shield. That's why I vacated the post.”
The largest civic body in the state has already witnessed arrests of many councillors over extortion charges and a rush of resignations by others from their posts after the BJP came to power in Bengal. One of them, Sushanta Ghosh, has gone into hiding after a case was registered at Anandapur police station in the city for extortion of `3 crores from the hawkers in his ward no. 103. His car driver, Sujit Chowdhury, was arrested by the police from Bengal-Odisha border.
