Bhubaneswar: Chandrabhaga Beach in Odisha’s Puri district turned into a scene of grief on Sunday as three young men lost their lives in two separate drowning incidents, both caused by powerful sea currents.
The first tragedy unfolded near the Eco Retreat site, where two friends from Bhubaneswar ventured into the waters. Eyewitnesses recounted how the duo was suddenly caught in a surge of strong waves, pulling them away from the shore. Despite prompt efforts by lifeguards and locals, the pair could not be saved and was declared dead after being brought ashore.
Not long after, a second incident occurred just a short distance away. A youth from the Pahal area of Cuttack, who had entered the sea for a bath, was swept away by the same treacherous currents. Rescue teams later recovered his body.
Police and lifeguard personnel responded swiftly to both emergencies, coordinating recovery efforts and identifying the victims through family members and personal belongings.
Meanwhile, the authorities on Sunday renewed their appeal for beachgoers to avoid venturing into the sea during rough weather, stressing that strong currents at this time of year can turn deadly in seconds. The twin tragedies cast a sombre shadow over Chandrabhaga, a destination usually celebrated for its scenic charm and tranquility.
