Bhubaneswar: A sudden Nor’wester storm swept across parts of Odisha on Thursday, bringing relief from the prevailing heatwave but leaving behind a trail of destruction in some areas. Three persons were killed and another critically injured in Keonjhar district after a temporary tent structure collapsed due to strong winds.
The incident took place in the Naranpur area of the district when powerful gusts accompanied by the storm struck the region. According to reports, the temporary tent collapsed suddenly, trapping several people underneath the debris.
Three persons died on the spot, while another sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, officials said.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). He also conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to provide all necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, the Nor’wester brought much-needed respite from the scorching summer conditions in several other parts of the state, including Jajpur district. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall brought down temperatures after days of intense heat and humidity.
Residents in many areas welcomed the rainfall, which provided temporary relief from the oppressive weather conditions prevailing across Odisha over the past several days.
