Ballari: Ballari police on Thursday arrested a man, his father and younger brother for allegedly murdering the man's wife and her father during a family meeting convened to discuss the husband's suspicion over his wife's fidelity.
The victims, Nagalakshmi (24), a homemaker, and her father Srinivasa alias Venkatesh (47), were hanged to death on the afternoon of July 7, while Nagalakshmi's mother Posamma (48) sustained grievous injuries in the attack.
According to Superintendent of Police Dr Suman D Pennekar, the arrested are Teja (29), Nagalakshmi's husband, his younger brother Venkatesh (27) and their father Gurushankar (50). The trio has been remanded to judicial custody. Police have also seized the knife, machete, axes and other material allegedly used in the crime.
Police said Nagalakshmi and Teja had been married for seven years and have two children.
According to Posamma's complaint, Teja telephoned her alleging that Nagalakshmi was involved in an illicit relationship and asked her and her husband to come to his house in Guggarahatti for a discussion.
Posamma and Srinivasa reached the house around 2 pm, where Teja, Nagalakshmi, Teja's parents Gurushankar and Radha, and his younger brother Venkatesh were present. During the meeting, Teja allegedly repeated his allegations and told his in-laws to take Nagalakshmi back as he no longer wanted her to stay in the house.
When Nagalakshmi said she would leave with her two children, Teja refused and insisted that she leave alone. He then sent his mother to bring the children from school.
According to the complaint, around 3 pm, Teja, Gurushankar and Venkatesh allegedly threw chilli powder at Nagalakshmi, Posamma and Srinivasa before attacking them with the weapons. Nagalakshmi and her father died on the spot, while Posamma suffered serious injuries and was shifted to hospital, where her statement was recorded.
A case was registered at APMC Yard Police Station under Sections 103(1), 109 read with 3(5) of BNS.
Dr Pennekar said police would seek custody of the accused for further interrogation, complete the investigation at the earliest and file the charge sheet before the court while seeking a speedy trial.
