BHOPAL: The deadly swine flu has claimed its first victim in Bhopal, after an 80-year-old man succumbed to the H1N1 virus, officials said on Sunday.
The deceased, admitted in a private hospital here, was found to be infected by H1N1 virus and had respiratory issues.
This was the first death due to swine flu, reported in Bhopal in the current year.
The state health department was alarmed by the sudden surge of H1N1 positive cases in the state capital in the last 12 days.
As many as 43 swine flu cases tested positive in Bhopal in September, a health official said.
Twelve cases tested positive for H1N1 virus in the last week of August.
“Of the total 232 H1N1 tests conducted since January, 65 have tested positive”, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Manish Sharma said.
Other cities in Madhya Pradesh such as Ujjain and Katni have also reported H1N1 cases.
H1N1 testing has been carried out in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, since other medical facilities in the state lack the test kits, a health official said.
The health officials however said that the situation is being closely monitored and there is no need to panic.
H1N1 is a strain of influenza and can cause symptoms similar to seasonal flu such as fever, cough, sore throat and body ache.
