Supreme Court to Mark Aravalli Limits

The hearing follows the Court’s November order that accepted elevation-linked definitions, barred new mining leases till a management plan is drawn, and kept core or inviolate zones off limits.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the fight over what counts as the Aravalli Hills. The matter, titled In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and Ancillary Issues, is listed for Monday, December 29, before Chief Justice Surya Kant with Justices J K Maheshwari and A G Masih.

The hearing follows the Court’s November order that accepted elevation-linked definitions, barred new mining leases till a management plan is drawn, and kept core or inviolate zones off limits. The file before the Bench is expected to cover progress on mapping, identification of protected clusters, and steps taken by Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat under the order.

The Bench can seek fresh affidavits, set clocked milestones, and mark what counts as non-negotiable, dark-zone aquifers and wildlife corridors among them.
