Stray Dogs Occupying Hospital Beds in Odisha Sparks Outrage Over Facility Management

Viral video from Keonjhar facility raises questions on sanitation and supervision.

Bhubaneswar: A video purportedly showing three stray dogs resting on hospital beds inside a government-run healthcare facility in Odisha's Keonjhar district has triggered public outrage and renewed concerns over maintenance and monitoring standards in public health institutions.

The footage, which surfaced on social media on Tuesday, allegedly shows three dogs lying on separate beds inside a ward of the Sainkula Medical Centre in Keonjhar district. The video quickly went viral, drawing criticism from social media users and local residents who questioned how animals gained access to a patient-care area.

The incident has reignited debate over the condition of government healthcare facilities, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, where issues relating to infrastructure, sanitation and patient services frequently come under scrutiny.

Several users on social media expressed concern that while patients in many public hospitals often complain about overcrowding and inadequate facilities, hospital beds at the centre appeared to have been left unattended, allowing stray animals to occupy them. The visuals also raised questions about infection-control protocols and the overall upkeep of the facility.

The video prompted demands for an inquiry into the circumstances under which the dogs entered the ward and whether adequate supervision and security measures were in place at the hospital.

Hospital authorities, when contacted, reportedly maintained that the footage was old and did not reflect the current situation at the facility. However, officials did not immediately provide documentary evidence or details to independently establish when the video was recorded.

As of Tuesday evening, no formal statement had been issued by the district health administration regarding the authenticity of the footage or any action initiated in response to the controversy.
