Shah Orders Crackdown On Drug Networks

Shah directed the state to launch a special drive to clear more than 25,000 pending forensic cases.

New Delhi:Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday directed enforcement agencies to target the kingpins of drug trafficking networks rather than confining action to small-time peddlers, while calling for tighter border and coastal security in Gujarat.

Chairing a high-level review meeting in Ahmedabad, Shah also directed officials to strengthen measures against cybercrime, terrorism and illegal migration.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and senior officials of central and state agencies attended the meeting.

An official statement said the meeting reviewed border and coastal security, implementation of the new criminal laws, narcotics trafficking, cybercrime, terrorism, illegal migration and disaster management.

Citing Gujarat's nearly 2,340-km coastline and its international border with Pakistan, Shah stressed the need for stronger surveillance and coordination among the Border Security Force, Coast Guard, state police and central agencies.

He reviewed the implementation of the new criminal laws and said 92 per cent of chargesheets in Gujarat were being filed within 60 days and 86 per cent within 90 days.

Shah directed the state to launch a special drive to clear more than 25,000 pending forensic cases.

On narcotics trafficking, he said investigations must target entire networks, including their principal operators, with greater emphasis on tracing financial transactions and confiscating illicit assets.

The home minister also directed officials to strengthen the state's cybercrime response mechanism and the national 1930 cyber fraud helpline.

He called for stronger counter-terrorism capabilities and faster identification and deportation of foreign nationals staying illegally, in accordance with the law.

Shah appreciated the deportation of 2,412 illegal foreign nationals during special drives.

The meeting also reviewed fire safety, disaster management, the Ahmedabad Urban Flood Management Project and the survey and disposal of enemy properties.

Shah directed central and state agencies to work in close coordination and regularly review progress against prescribed targets.
