SC Seeks Replies On Yamuna Expressway Bus Fire
The Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and Uttar Pradesh chief secretary over a sleeper bus fire that killed nine passengers.
The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Union road transport ministry and the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary on an application concerning the sleeper bus fire on the Yamuna Expressway that killed nine passengers.
A bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan issued notices on the application filed by Agra resident Kishan Chand Jain. It seeks a time-bound report from the chief secretary on the fire near Jewar during the night of September 23–24.
The applicant has asked that the report cover the cause of the fire, the bus’s ownership, registration, permit, fitness certificate, insurance and authorised passenger capacity, as well as compliance with vehicle construction and fire safety requirements.
The application also seeks a direction barring transport vehicles with more than five unpaid traffic challans from crossing toll plazas on national highways, state highways or expressways until the dues are paid.
The bus, travelling from Delhi to Bihar, caught fire near the 33-km milestone of the Yamuna Expressway in the Jewar police station area of Greater Noida on September 24. Nine passengers died.
