Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Strengthens Media Oversight with Diverse Parliamentary Nominations

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appointed BJP's Dr. Sambit Patra, Shiv Sena's Naresh Ganpat Mhaske, and Congress's Kali Charan Munda as members of the Press Council of India (PCI). Established under the Press Council Act of 1978, the PCI is a quasi-judicial body that safeguards press freedom and upholds standards for newspapers and news agencies in India. The Council comprises 28 members from the press, Parliament, and professional bodies, including 13 working journalists, six newspaper management representatives, one news agency representative, five parliamentary members (three nominated by the Lok Sabha Speaker, two by the Rajya Sabha Chairman), and three nominees from education, law, and literature, selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Bar Council of India, and Sahitya Akademi.
