Restaurant Owner Killed in Makeshift Goods Lift Accident in UP

Saharanpur police probe whether technical failure or negligence caused the fatal incident at a restaurant.

A restaurant owner died after coming under a makeshift goods lift at his eatery in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, police said on Tuesday.He had stuck out his neck into the lift shaft at his 'Khatirdari' restaurant on Court Road late Monday night when the supplies he had asked for did not come from the upper floor on time, they said.

Harsh Khurana (58) was allegedly hit on the head by the lift and he sustained critical injuries. later, he was declared dead at the hospital.
Sadar Bazar Station House Officer Chandrasen Saini said was a resident of Tilak Nagar Colony and owned the restaurant. The lift was not a conventional lift but a makeshift one used exclusively for transporting goods, the officer said.
According to police, Khurana had asked workers on the upper floor to send down some supplies at around 1.30 am. When the items did not arrive for a long time, he went near the lift to check the reason for the delay.
"The lift suddenly came down and struck Khurana on the head and neck, leaving him critically injured," Saini said.
The incident triggered panic among the staff, who rushed Khurana to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, the officer said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said.
Police are investigating whether the accident was caused by a technical fault or negligence, he added.
